One step can make a difference

Counting down to the CIOB Global 5K Run/Walk.

In construction, we understand the value of progress. Every project starts with a single action. A conversation. A design. A foundation.

The same is true of wellbeing.

We’re now less than 10 weeks away from the first ever CIOB Global 5K Run/Walk in support of CIOB Assist. On 3 October, members, colleagues, friends and families from across the world will come together to walk, jog or run 5 kilometres and raise funds for a cause that supports our community when it needs it most.

But this initiative is about much more than reaching a finish line.

Construction is an industry built on resilience, yet we all know the pressures that can come with long hours, challenging projects and demanding environments. Taking care of our physical and mental wellbeing is not a luxury; it is essential.

That is why I am so excited to see this event taking shape.

What makes the CIOB Global 5K Run/Walk special is that everyone can take part. You do not need to be a runner. You do not need specialist equipment. You do not even need to have completed a 5K before. Whether you walk the distance, jog sections of it or run the entire route, every step counts. The event has been designed to be inclusive and accessible, bringing together people of all abilities from across our global community.

To help those starting from scratch, we are encouraging participants to use the NHS Couch to 5K programme. Over the next nine weeks, it provides a simple and supported way to gradually build confidence and fitness. Combined with the encouragement of colleagues and fellow CIOB members, it offers a fantastic pathway to the event in October.

And of course, a huge thank you to the Pagabo Foundation – none of this would be possible without their support!

Throughout the coming weeks, we will be sharing training tips, participant stories, fundraising ideas and updates from across our regions. We want to celebrate every milestone, whether it is your first walk around the block, your first parkrun or your first uninterrupted kilometre. Through our partnership with parkrun and our CIOB community channels, participants can connect, encourage one another and be part of something truly global.

Of course, the event also supports an incredibly important cause.

Every pound raised will help CIOB Assist continue its vital work supporting members and their families through financial difficulties, providing wellbeing support, practical guidance and assistance during challenging times. By taking part, you are helping ensure that no member has to face those challenges alone.

So, with 10 weeks to go, my challenge to you is simple.

Sign up. Invite a colleague. Encourage a friend. Bring your Family along

Take a walk today.

Not because you have to complete a 5K tomorrow, but because every journey starts with a first step.

On 3 October, thousands of steps taken around the world will become one shared movement. I hope you will be part of it.

Let’s get moving, together.
